Day 9: Candles and Candleabras

I love centerpieces with candles.

My mom decorated with candles alot when I was growing up. She still does. And there is nothing like a soft candle glow to give a room a cozy feeling.

My mother also always had these plastic candelabras she put in the windows every Christmas. I never liked them because they were plastic.

Last Christmas I rushed to Arkansas because my father was dying. I went straight to the hospital and stayed awhile. When it started to get dark I knew I needed to go. My parents live 30 minutes up the mountain from where they had dad and my night vision is rather bad.

The 7 hour drive, combined with the situation were stressful enough. Adding driving after dark with super bad night vision, in the mountains with no lights, and it all being unfamiliar and hovering just above freezing with wet roads....

When I came around the bend on my parents street (which is mostly wooded, undeveloped lots), there were those candelabras. I couldn't see the house yet as it was so dark, but that soft orange glow was there welcoming me home. I can't even begin to describe the comforting effect that sight was for me.

Now, I'd like to find myself a set of candelabras for my windows. Some day they just might welcome my kids home and provide a familiar comfort.

  1. Love candles! In fact, I bought a large Yankee candle jar - Peach & Mango Salsa, or something like that - on clearance, and I haven't decided if it's going to be a gift or for myself. Hmmm.
